Here's my theory what if the duke's mother and the maid's mother were both in love with the Duke's father. But since he chose the Duke's mother, the maid's mother (whose supposedly also THE witch) cursed him (the eldest son). Not knowing that her daughter would fall madly in love with him in the future. Cursing not only the duke but also the love between him and the witch's daughter.

as to the dream sequence at the end, how could Alice sense the passage of time within a dream? simple causality and observation of time as a linear construct isn't supposed to exist within the subconscious mind.
